How to Care for Cashmere & Wool Sweaters: A Complete Guide

A fine knit sweater can last for many years — if you treat it well. Cashmere and wool are natural fibres that reward gentle care and punish shortcuts. Here is the simple routine we recommend for keeping your knitwear soft, shapely and pill-free.

Washing: gentler is better

Most cashmere and wool sweaters are best hand-washed in cool water with a small amount of mild or wool-specific detergent. Soak for a few minutes, press the water through the fabric, and avoid wringing or scrubbing — friction is what causes pilling and felting. If you prefer a machine, use the wool or delicate cycle, cold water, and a mesh bag.

Always turn the sweater inside out, and never use hot water or regular bleach. Wash knitwear less often than you think; airing a sweater between wears is usually enough.

Drying: keep its shape

Never hang a wet sweater — the weight of the water will stretch the shoulders and body. Instead, press out excess water in a towel, then lay the sweater flat on a fresh towel and reshape it by hand. Dry away from direct heat and sunlight. Done right, your sweater keeps the exact shape you bought.

De-pilling: a quick refresh

Pilling is normal on natural fibres, especially at first. Lay the sweater flat and use a fabric comb or a dedicated sweater shaver, working gently in one direction. A few minutes restores a smooth, like-new surface.

Storing: fold, don't hang

Knitwear should be folded, never hung, to avoid stretched shoulders. Store clean — moths are drawn to body oils, not the wool itself. Add a cedar block or lavender sachet, and keep sweaters in a breathable drawer or box rather than a sealed plastic bag.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Hanging wet or heavy knits
  • Hot water, tumble drying, or radiators
  • Over-washing — air them out instead
  • Storing unwashed for the season

Treated this way, a good sweater becomes softer and more characterful over time. Explore our wool sweaters & knitwear, cardigans and pullovers — all knit in our own workshop.
