How to Tell If Cashmere Is Good Quality

Not all cashmere is equal. A few simple checks help you tell a quality knit from a thin, short-lived one — whether you're shopping in person or online.

1. Feel: soft, not fuzzy

Good cashmere feels soft and smooth straight away, not overly fluffy. Excessive surface fuzz can signal shorter fibres that will pill quickly. Quality fibres feel clean and dense.

2. The stretch test

Gently stretch a section and let go. Quality knit springs back to shape. If it stays stretched or feels flimsy, the knit is loose or the yarn is weak.

3. Knit density

Hold it to the light. A tight, even knit blocks more light and holds its shape; a loose, gappy knit feels thin and wears out faster. Density usually matters more than a number on a label.

4. Ply

"Ply" is how many strands are twisted together. Two-ply is a good balance of lightness and durability for everyday sweaters; single-ply can be very fine but more delicate.

5. Finishing

Check the details: tidy seams, ribbed cuffs and hem that hold their shape, secure buttons, and a collar that lies flat. Good finishing is a sign of care throughout.

6. A little pilling is normal

Even quality cashmere pills slightly at first where there's friction — that's natural, not a defect. It's easily fixed; see how to stop and fix pilling. For more, read our buyer's guide.
