A great sweater is an investment you reach for again and again. Whether you are choosing cashmere or wool, a few simple checks will help you buy something that looks refined and lasts. Here is what to look for.
1. The fibre
Natural fibres — cashmere and wool — breathe, insulate and age beautifully in a way synthetics cannot. Feel the fabric: it should be soft without feeling thin or fuzzy, and spring back when you gently stretch it.
2. Gauge & weight
Gauge is how fine or chunky the knit is. A fine gauge gives a sleek, layerable sweater; a heavier gauge gives cosy texture and structure. Neither is better — choose by season and the look you want. Either way, the knit should feel dense and even, not loose or gappy.
3. Fit
Shoulders should sit where your shoulders end. The body should skim, not cling or balloon, and sleeves should reach the wrist bone. A good sweater looks clean on its own and layers neatly under a jacket. Check our size guidance on each product page to find your measurements.
4. Construction & finishing
Look at the details: ribbed cuffs and hem that hold their shape, tidy seams, secure buttons, and a collar or neckline that lies flat. These small things separate a sweater that keeps its shape from one that sags after a season.
5. Care & longevity
Buy what you will actually look after. Natural knits last for years with gentle washing and flat drying — see our care guide. Still unsure which fibre suits you? Our wool vs cashmere comparison can help.
