Wool and cashmere are both natural, warm and beautiful — but they feel and behave differently. If you are deciding between them, here is a clear, practical comparison to help you choose.
What they are
Wool comes from sheep. It is springy, resilient and naturally insulating, with a fibre that holds its shape well. Cashmere comes from the soft undercoat of cashmere goats. Its fibres are finer and lighter, which is why cashmere feels so soft against the skin.
Warmth
Cashmere is remarkably warm for its weight — lightweight yet insulating, ideal for layering. Wool is also very warm and tends to be more wind-resistant and hard-wearing, making it excellent for colder, more active days.
Softness & feel
Cashmere wins on pure softness; it has a luxurious, almost weightless handle. Quality wool is soft too, with a bit more structure and bounce — many people prefer that substantial feel for everyday knitwear.
Durability
Wool is generally the tougher of the two and resists wear and wrinkles well. Cashmere is delicate by nature, so it rewards gentle care (see our cashmere care guide). Both last for years when looked after.
Price
Cashmere is rarer and more labour-intensive to produce, so it usually costs more than wool. Buying factory-direct — as you do with ZHILIFS — brings that premium feel within closer reach.
So, which should you choose?
- Choose cashmere for the softest, lightest, most luxurious layer.
- Choose wool for everyday warmth, structure and durability.
